The # 1 Problem for the Digital Age Human
Too many of us live our lives in the shadows of our deepest purpose, distracted by something we think is more important than the light of our truest selves.
A common problem many of us resist confronting is being faithful to our soul’s desire to pursue the life path where we will become the most fulfilled version of ourselves.
We do this because we lack clarity over what we want or what is possible.
This clarity is clouded by trusting that social standards and our current personal circumstances have our best interests in mind in terms of how we invest our time and focus.
We have a ceaseless barrage of information at our fingertips in the form of social media posts, ads, and digital notifications, not to mention the influence of other people’s priorities who are also influenced by this stream of digital information.
It becomes a confusing puzzle to decipher our most authentic desires and curiosities from the noise of the digital herd.
Even when we decide to get serious and focus on something, it isn’t long before we become curious for what kinds of instant and short-lived dopamine we could get from scrolling information on our phones.
Many of us feel trapped in a cycle where we are not fulfilled by life. We convince ourselves this is just the way it is without exploring options for changing our lives.
It’s natural that we seek distraction. We are naturally curious beings and want to avoid discomfort and pain. This includes mental anguish over doing a task we find boring or unfulfilling.
The sad truth is that it has become commonplace to seek distractions from an activity that is already distracting us from living our true potential.
I am talking about unfulfilling jobs, unnecessary relationships, and die-hard habits that are not aligned with our goals, natural curiosities, and the fullest expression of our innate talents.
We become dedicated to upholding the rigid structures of these trends because we fear not having security to uphold our levels of comfort and routine.
We choose a safe route instead of looking at ways to solve the problems preventing us from pursuing our purpose.
These habits of distraction have become ingrained in our daily behavior.
The vast majority of us live our days connected to a constant stream of digital distractions while remaining disconnected from an inner dialogue with our truest selves.
Without periods of mindfulness and connection with our truest thoughts and feelings, we create an inner environment ripe for bouts of depression, anxiety and anger.
We Fear not Living with Purpose
All these emotions sprout from fear.
Is it fear of not having enough to sustain our physical survival?
Or is it fear of living a life where we do not realize our full potential?
To experience periods of that inner dialogue where we converse with our deep inner self, we need to disconnect from the information sources competing to capture our attention and curiosity and make a habit to consume supportive information.
What was it in our experience that conditioned us to turn away from that inner purpose?
The sooner we can recognize this and accept it, the sooner we will have the confidence and clarity to start making changes for our present day self.
Your past is not you.
When we feel stuck in life and like we have no purpose, we need to pinpoint the experiences in our past that caused us to lose heart in our life’s work.
This will not be easy or comfortable but we need to work through this to arrive at a new mindset where we can enact change.
I wrote about this in my previous letter on Rising from a Creative Rut Here.
Why We Should Solve this Problem
Living with a sense of purpose makes the world a brighter place.
The #1 problem for the modern human living in the digital age is living a life detached from a sense of purpose.
This is caused by priority confusion because of an inundation of digital media and expectations formed by society and our existing circumstances.
When we solve this problem our quality of life will be much more fulfilling because we will be doing more of the things our hearts want to do with our time.
We will have the leverage and space to help others solve this problem in their own lives too.
Helping others solve their problems increases our sense of value and support within a community, can increase our financial health, and enriches our own purpose.
Common objections to solving this problem
We often talk ourselves out of solving this problem by making statements that are contrary to our soul’s desire.
Statements geared towards security and safety because we prefer comfort over achieving our goals.
We assume daily habits that reinforce limiting beliefs and keep us pinned down behind an obstacle of our own making with no clear intention of overcoming it.
We all experience this in our own way at different points of our lives.
By confronting it, we are embracing the opportunity to grow as individuals and be much more excited about what we do in our daily lives.
Overcoming resistance to our life’s purpose
With the proper habits and mindsets you can align your life with a purposeful existence that engages your natural interests and innate talents.
Solving our problems requires creativity, consistency, and an open mind.
Stubbornness is not your friend here.
We must learn to recognize when we are out of alignment with our purpose and make a plan of action to bring it back into balanced existence.
We have the opportunity to make changes in how we live to craft the life we envision for ourselves.
We will always be a work in progress. This is how it should be.
When we’re not actively working to create or sustain the life we want for ourselves we create an emotional feedback loop that spawns continued discontentment with our lives and adds more stress.
To connect with your purpose:
Do not edit yourself or your life vision
Embrace your interests and passions as your sacred doctrine of self
Know where your true purpose lies by finding what skills & curiosities make you the most fulfilled
Trust your heart’s longings.
Assert yourself into your life and realize them.
Align with your Purpose by Becoming a Creator
Creating educational content on a subject you are knowledgeable and passionate about is one of the most effective ways to align your life with your purpose.
A lot of this kind of clarity over your inner self can be realized by developing a content strategy that shares your story and your learnings with the world so they perceive you as gifted with certain skill sets and knowledge.
This positive feedback allows you to identify as one gifted in areas of your strengths.
This validates your curiosity, innate skill sets, and your natural drive to pursue the practice of living your purpose.
When you pursue your natural curiosities and skill sets without a feeling of guilt, shame or a sense of limited-time, you are priming your truest self to manifest a life where you make a living doing what you are naturally passionate about and which is an activity you thrive at.
Your mind remains in deep learning.
Your brain stays healthy by always exercising new thoughts, which keeps you engaged in projects where you are living your purpose everyday.
Living with a sense of purpose is accomplished when we use our natural skill sets and interests in our daily lives.
Personally, I can say that orbiting the star that we do on the planet that we do with a sense of purpose is a fucking awesome feeling.
I want to feel this way every day of my life and help others feel it too.
